Meet before sunrise at the Magalies River Valley, and moments later you’ll be floating over the tree tops in a Hot Air Balloon Safaris, watching the light travel over the land as you look out over the Cradle of Humankind, or perhaps drift above the Magaliesberg mountain range, in a region boasting some of the best ballooning weather in the world.
Set aside four to five hours for the entire adventure, including transport to and from the launch. Although the drive from Johannesburg itself takes about an hour, there is quite a bit of pre-flight preparation to be done.
The meeting point is at the Skeerpoort balloon launch-field near Hartbeespoort Dam in time for a pre-sunrise hot tea, coffee and biscuits. Landing takes place amid the countryside fields and your arrival back on earth will be greeted with champagne and a “citation for bravery”.
Clothing should be layered, so it’s warm enough for the chilly early morning but cool enough when the sun comes out. Trainers or similar comfortable flat shoes are recommended.
